Gua Sha
Meadowlark Wellbeing offers Gua Sha which is a traditional Chinese healing technique that involves using a smooth-edged tool to stroke the skin while pressing on it, which raises small, red, rash-like dots that may help increase blood flow and create a “lifting” effect on the skin. The technique is believed to help relieve muscle pain and tension, promote detoxification, and encourage healing.

Gua Sha is an alternative therapy technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged instrument known as a gua massage tool to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow. The technique is based on traditional Chinese medicine and is often used to treat muscle pain and tension, as well as chronic pain conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. Gua Sha is generally performed on a person’s back, buttocks, neck, arms, and legs, and a gentle version of it is even used on the face as a facial technique. The practitioner applies massage oil to the skin and then uses the tool to repeatedly scrape the skin in a downward motion, gradually increasing intensity to determine how much force the patient can handle. The technique may reduce inflammation and benefit the immune system. However, there might be side effects, and limited research has been conducted on its effectiveness.
